The Virginia Community College System invites applications and nominations for the presidency of Danville Community College. As one of Virginia’s 23 community colleges, Danville Community College provides financially accessible, high-quality, comprehensive educational programs and services to students, residents, and employers of the City of Danville as well as Pittsylvania County and Halifax County.
This public, two-year, open-admission institution operates on an 86-acre campus located approximately two miles from downtown Danville. Serving a racially diverse population of about 134,000 residents, Danville Community is the largest provider of educational opportunities in the service region, which covers just over 1,800 square miles.
Historically, two institutions – Danville Technical Institute and the Danville Division of Virginia Polytechnic Institute – had served the area for decades before merging into one institution. Beginning in the summer of 1966, all programs taught by Danville Technical Institute were brought under the Virginia Department of Community Colleges. Effective July 1, 1968, the Danville Division of Virginia Polytechnic Institute merged with the existing community college to provide the comprehensive programs now offered.
Danville Community College offers more than 100 programs in general education, college transfer, and career training, along with customized classes to meet the needs of business and industry. The programs offered include Advanced Manufacturing; Art, Design, & Humanities; Business & Marketing; Computer Science & Information Technology; Criminal Justice and Public Safety; Education; Engineering, Science, & Health. In addition to various associate degrees, Danville Community College offers numerous technical and workforce programs and certificates.

The next president will be a skilled strategist able to envision, propose, and implement lasting change. This individual also will have a proven record of building relationships and engaging the community and other external partners in improving student access and success.
The president will develop and maintain strong leadership teams; seek continuous improvement; and foster positive change though communication, transparency, integrity, and collaboration.
This leader will build dynamic and successful partnerships with highly diverse stakeholders and advance fundraising efforts.
Internally, the individual will ensure operational efficiency, fiscal strength, and college affordability, while ensuring the sustainability of programs to meet the needs of the students and community at large.
An understanding of the mission and goals of a comprehensive community college in the 21st Century and appreciation for urban colleges are essential characteristics, along with a clear commitment to instruction, student access/success, revenue generation, community partnerships, diversity, equity, and strategic leadership.
The local College Board and college community have identified the following organizational priorities for the college in the next 3-5 years:
- Increasing enrollment and retention at Danville Community College, especially considering regional factors such as declining population, low educational attainment, and higher education competitors.
- Meeting the needs of the region with a focus on offering relevant programs that aid economic growth and development of the region.
- Engaging the community and building community relations and partnerships.
- Meeting the increasing demand of regional employers for short-term workforce training.
- Building and retaining a strong workforce at Danville Community College.
May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.
Qualifications for President
To accomplish the above, qualified candidates must have an earned doctorate degree and demonstrated successful senior executive experience. Previous experience must include significant responsibility for programs, budgets, personnel, facilities, and other appropriate administrative duties. The successful candidate must have proven leadership abilities along with excellent communications skills, a strong belief in a collaborative administrative style, as well as a servant leadership perspective. She/he must also have a broad vision for the college together with the skills and energy for implementation, in addition to the demonstrated ability to work with representatives from businesses, industry, the government, and the community at large.
Travel as necessary is required.

About the service area
Danville is in south-central Virginia along the North Carolina border. Situated in a picturesque rural setting, Danville has easy access to nearby North Carolina cities such as Greensboro (45 minutes), Raleigh (1.5 hours), and the Research Triangle Park (1.25 hours). In Virginia, Roanoke (1.5 hours), Richmond (2.5 hours), and Charlottesville (3 hours) are easy drives from Danville.
The Danville-Pittsylvania region is known for its strong advanced manufacturing sector. The Danville Pittsylvania County Chamber of Commerce notes the region has recently been selected as the location for some of the largest economic development projects in Virginia. A $500 million Caesars Resort and Casino is under construction with opening planned for 2023.
Halifax County is home to South Boston, which offers many amenities for easy living. For example, South Boston features a historic tobacco warehouse district, which involved transforming the former Reynolds Tobacco Company into space that includes an art gallery, performing arts theatre, and museum exhibits. South Boston also has a one-stop recreational site, World of Sports, which features two theaters, bowling alley, skating rink, arcade, and restaurant.
Overall, the College’s service region is rich in outdoor recreation, an entertainment and arts scenes, historic downtowns, small-town charm, beautiful views, and low cost of living.
