Applications are now being accepted for the position of Dean, School of Social/Behavioral Sciences & Multicultural Studies, at San Diego Mesa College.
While the current vacancy exists at San Diego Mesa College, applicants should understand that they are subject to assignment at any District facility at the option of the Chancellor.

The Dean, School of Social and Behavioral Science and Multicultural Studies, reports to the Vice President of Instruction, and is responsible for planning, organizing, directing, evaluating, and advocating for all instructional programs in close cooperation with Department Chairs. This includes the coordination and supervision of class schedules, faculty teaching assignments, curriculum development, staff development, and budget planning. The Dean is involved in the hiring and evaluation of staff - both academic and classified. The Dean is expected to establish and maintain connections with relevant community and professional organizations as well as participate in college governance and decision making. The college is looking for an applicant who is a positive, collaborative, innovative, and energetic leader.


Major Responsibilities:
Provide effective leadership in the areas of planning and administering programs in the areas included within the School of Social and Behavioral Sciences and Multicultural Studies. The programs include: Anthropology, Architecture, Black Studies, Chicana/o Studies, Environmental Design, Geography, History, Philosophy, Psychology, Political Science, Sustainability, Sociology, and Womens Studies.
Work collaboratively with faculty, classified professionals, staff, and academic leaders to develop long- and short-range goals for the school, including alignment with the colleges master plan, strategic plan, and other planning documents and processes.
Conduct and support ongoing Program Review for the school.
Work collaboratively with faculty, classified professionals, staff, and academic leaders to support curriculum development and review at both the course and program levels.
Work collaboratively with department chairs and administrators to understand and utilize enrollment management strategies in schedule development and other aspects of school management.
Understand and contribute to a college participatory governance structure and collective bargaining environment.
Develop collaborative relationships with departments and schools across the campus.
Participate in campus committee work to help drive and influence college planning and future directions.
Execute all aspects of program management to include planning, organizing, promoting, budgeting, and evaluating programs/projects/facilities, including grant funded projects.
Apply local, state, and federal regulations to the Colleges and Schools instructional programs, courses, and activities.
Work collaboratively with department chairs and administrators to hire, supervise, evaluate, support, and mentor all faculty.
Work collaboratively with faculty, classified professionals, and staff to convene meetings, establish, communicate, and carry out the Schools planning and goals.
Prepare all required reports, including District, State, and Federal.
Develop and maintain positive relationships with the community and professional organizations.
Provide direct support to students as needed and make referrals as appropriate to college resources.
Advocate for programs, departments, and disciplines at the college, district, and community levels.
Work collaboratively and transparently with the VPI and other administrative leaders.
Promote and support policies, actions, and activities that foster an institutional culture of diversity, equity, inclusion, and antiracism.
Demonstrated cultural competency, sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, faculty, classified professionals, and staff.


Qualifications:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Possession of a Masters degree from a regionally accredited institution
    AND
    one (1) year of formal training, internship, or leadership experience reasonably related to the administrators assignment;
    OR
  2. Possession of a lifetime California Community College Supervisor Credential.

PhD or terminal degree from a regionally accredited institution.
Minimum of 3 years (or the equivalent) classroom teaching experience in a higher education setting.
Demonstrated effective interpersonal skills including both oral and written communication.
Demonstrated effective conflict resolution skills.
Demonstrated ability to foster and maintain high standards of instruction by providing leadership in establishing goals /objectives.
Evidence of a clear understanding of leading-edge instructional methods and technologies that support teaching and learning in a community college setting.
Evidence of knowledge of diverse effective learning theories and epistemologies across a variety of learning spaces.
Evidence of a commitment to supporting student success through policies, actions, and praxis that foster an institutional culture of diversity, equity, inclusion, and antiracism.
Evidence of demonstrated commitment to student achievement and equity in setting priorities and implementing school and institutional goals.
Demonstrated, successful experience as an educational leader supporting goals and objectives of the academic fields of study represented by but not limited to the School of Social Behavioral Sciences and Multicultural Studies (SBSMCS).
Demonstrated knowledge of and experience with supporting Ethnic Studies programs.
Demonstrated knowledge of and experience with supporting Workforce Development and CTE programs.
Knowledge of and experience with the curriculum development process.
Experience with preparing and managing a departmental budget in a transparent way that meets the goals and objectives of programs and disciplines within the School.
Experience with planning, organizing, coordinating, supervising, and evaluating academic programs, and advocating for future resource needs.
Experience with a variety of fund-raising efforts including grant management at various levels.
Experience with coordinating the selection, use, and maintenance of equipment and facilities assigned to the school.
Experience in developing relationships with high schools, transfer institutions, and industry partners to promote seamless pathways for students.
Demonstrated ability to provide effective coordination, supervision, encouragement, and support to faculty, classified professionals, and other staff.
Experience with the community college accreditation process.
Knowledge of, experience with, and respect for working in a participatory governance environment.
Demonstrated understanding and experience working in a collective bargaining environment.
Demonstrated commitment to the missions and values of the California Community College System, the San Diego Community College System, and Mesa College.


Licenses:
[If possess] California Community College Supervisor Credential (valid for life)


Pay Information:
Range 18 ($9,033.99 $14,485.37) per month based on the current Management Salary Schedule.

Initial salary placement is commensurate with related experience and promotional rules. The District offers a comprehensive fringe benefit package including employer paid: medical, dental, and vision plans; sick and vacation leave; and opportunities for professional development. Initial Salary Placement, Promoted or transferred employees will be placed as specified in the Management Employees Handbook. This position is FLSA Exempt and may not accrue overtime. A temporary probationary period will be applied to the employee entering this assignment.
