Tidewater Community College has served South Hampton Roads – both students and employers – for 50 years. It has grown from 1 campus into a regional educational and economic force. TCC is the largest provider of higher education and workforce services in Hampton Roads, enrolling nearly 28,000 students in 2019-20. Founded in 1968 as a part of the Virginia Community College System, Tidewater Community College (TCC) services South Hampton Roads with 4 campuses in Chesapeake, Norfolk, Portsmouth, and Virginia Beach, 7 regional centers and 2 important cultural institutions. The college had 3,203 graduates in 2019-2020, 40 percent of whom pursued degrees that would let them transfer to 4-year institutions. Of South Hampton Roads residents enrolled in higher education 36% enrolled at TCC. TCC’s institutional accreditation is affirmed through 2027 by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges. 

POSITION SUMMARY:
The Coordinator for Outreach and Student Engagement provides support and reports to the Director of the Center for Military and Veterans Education in the leadership, management, and oversight of staff, programming and initiatives to increase military connected student enrollment, retention and engagement. This position helps ensure that students new to TCC receive exceptional advising with respect to selection of a program of study that is aligned with their desired educational outcome and that they are properly advised on efficient use of the various funding and educational benefits for which they might qualify. Responsibilities include representation of TCC on military installations and in the community, training staff personnel in the onboarding and advising of students, assisting in development of communications strategies for new and continuing students as well as the creation of engagement events that further the relationship between TCC, the local communities and prospective students.

FUNCTIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Assists the Director, CMVE in implementing and executing adoption of VCCS and Commonwealth of Virginia policies and procedures at the campus level.
  2. Coordinates base enrollment management strategies and academic classroom utilization, assisting with establishment of enrollment targets, outreach strategy, development of on-base course offerings based upon needs identified by the educational service offices and other opportunities that become available.
  3. Provides support to Director, CMVE in developing a student responsive class schedule including current and future modalities to meet Department of Defense MOU and/or Department of Veterans Affairs requirements.
  4. Develops and promotes effective communications and promotion of programs and course offerings to students, prospective students, and the military connected communities.
  5. Provides direct leadership and supervision of Base Representatives for operation and enrollment management at military base locations.
  6. Provides direct leadership and supervision of the VERITAS Veteran Liaisons for enrollment, advising and outreach efforts to support military connected student retention, graduation and transition to employment readiness.
  7. Provides support for the Director, CMVE for engaging campus and other college stakeholders to increase awareness of military educational trends and initiatives.
  8. Assists in planning and coordinating professional development and training opportunities for CMVE staff.
  9. Reviews and analyzes data to inform decision-making, assesses effectiveness of best practices and recommends changes that support increased enrollment, retention, persistence, and graduation.
  10. Supervises support personnel as needed.
  11. Perform such other tasks as assigned by the Director, Center for Military and Veterans Education (CMVE). May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor

KSA’s/Required Qualifications:

  1. Master’s degree from a regionally accredited institution is required.
  2. Extensive experience advising in higher education setting is required, with strong preference to assisting military connected students.
  3. Knowledge of the Department of Veterans Affairs education benefits and Department of Defense tuition assistance.
  4. Demonstrated ability to supervise a diverse staff made up of full-time, part-time employees and Department of Veterans Affairs work-study students.
  5. Ability to supervise a geographically dispersed team, across multiple military installations and campus locations.
  6. Knowledge of the college’s curricula and learning outcomes for both the academic and workforce sectors of the college.
  7. Ability to coordinate the scheduling of programs and courses on military bases in support of student needs assessments and review of college planning data and workforce development goals.
  8. Ability to advise and counsel prospective, current, and returning students concerning their educational goals, assisting them in selection of an appropriate curriculum and coursework to enable academic success and meeting educational goal outcomes.
  9. Ability to review military transcripts and identifying appropriate credit for programs of study, aligned with recommendations by the ACE Guide.
  10. Ability to advise students on military degree roadmaps for the college’s degrees and certifications based on the results of their transcript review and assist college faculty and staff in review of the degree roadmaps.
  11. Ability to provide advice for financial aid to include military TA, veteran’s programs, scholarships, federal financial aid, and other financial assistance programs.
  12. Ability to problem solve issues related to student records, registration, and payments, working with appropriate TCC staff from appropriate departments.
  13. Excellent skills in oral and written communication.
  14. Ability to interpret and apply college policies and procedures.
  15. Ability to resolve issues, resulting in mutual respect and tolerance for varying points of view.
  16. Ability to build collaborative teamwork, mutual respect, and collaborative spirit in a diverse, dynamic environment.
  17. Skilled in MS Office, MS Teams, and Student Information System.
